As you learn how to be a gardener you are going to learn about a lot of different gardening tools that are all designed to save you time and make your garden grow better. Obviously you do not have to buy every single tool that is being sold at your local hardware store or Home Depot. You can start small with a collection of basic tools and then work your way up to the bigger and more impressive tools that make lighter work of your gardening activities. Moving plants and dirt from one place to another in your garden can be accomplished using your hands. At the same time, using tools can save you time and keep the wear and tear on your body to a minimum. The following gardening tools have proved to be very popular and will get you off to a good start.
The garden spade is a very useful tool especially when you are growing smaller plants in your garden. Spades are fantastic for digging up or uprooting weeds. You can also use them to help clear debris and dirt away from your garden plants without your having to worry about accidentally damaging the plant’s base. You can use your spade to help with seed planting. You probably won’t use your spade every single day, but you will be glad you have it on hand when you have delicate earth work to get done. The spade is an incredible time and effort saving tool for people who have lots of different types of gardening projects.
Kneelers are great tools to have on hand. Most gardening involves spending a lot of time crouching or on your hands and needs. You can build your own garden kneelers without much difficulty, all you need are some large pieces of Styrofoam or other (similar) types of materials. You can also buy mats made especially for gardeners. Mats and kneelers are used to help ease the wear and tear on your knees that comes from gardening. You can also protect your clothing from wear and tear by using mats and kneelers.
Hand trowels are a must have. Lots of new gardeners simply use their hands to move dirt around, but a tool like the hori hori knife protects your hands and is far more efficient. Many gardeners use trowels to help them with the weeding process and to shift the dirt around the plants without harming the plants themselves. Hand trowels are extremely versatile and come in a bunch of different sizes and can be used on just about any plant in your garden.
It can take some time to figure out which gardening tools you need. When you first start out you will probably want to buy everything in the store. Instead of giving in to this temptation, start with a few simple tools and some good garden gloves you know you will use and then branch out later on. This way you won’t have to worry about spending too much money or cluttering up your shed or garage. Eventually you will be able to tell exactly which tool is needed for which gardening task you need to accomplish.
