Extensive green roofs may seem like a daunting project. In many ways, when approached sensibly, it is no more challenging than any other projects the average gardener takes on with no feelings of trepidation.
Important stages to adhere to when creating Extensive Green Roofs:
Firstly, an obvious and vital factor is to make sure the building and the roof that is to be covered is structurally sound and capable of carrying the extra weight.
Closely related to this, the roof needs to be and remain watertight. This starts with the actual structure of the roof itself, the more firm and flat it is the better. This applies no matter what angle the roof is. It needs to be rigid.
Secondly, a lightweight soil medium must be used. This should be of sufficient depth to nourish the plants but also shallow enough to keep the weight to a minimum.
Thirdly, with extensive green roofs good drainage is vital so as to avoid excess weight while ensuring adequate water so that the plants used can not just survive, but thrive.
Finally, we are best using drought tolerant plants owing to the nature of the environment we are placing them in. Choosing and using the right type of plants we are more likely to achieve an attractive green roof.

Extensive Green Roofs add another dimension to a garden. A watertight solid roof structure along with a lightweight soil medium, good drainage and using drought resistant plants are key factors for a successful project.
