Perennial gardening is a very popular type of gardening. This is because with perennials, each year after winter, the flowers grow again and bloom. Planting a few annuals in the garden can add some variety and color, but most should be perennials because then you do not have to spend the money and time to replant everything each year. Pansies are a popular annual for flower beds. These are fast growing and produce great blooms throughout the season. They are also very reasonably priced and you can buy enough to plant everywhere. Geraniums may be another annual choice. These are a little more expensive, but add some nice variety to the pansies and other perennials that are planted. The sweet potato plant can produce nice foliage for container gardening planters. These are a unique choice that you may also want to consider.
There are many types of perennials available including some of my favorites, allium bulbs and bearded iris bulbs. Both are simple to grow only requiring lots of sun and well drained soil. They make good additions to gardens due to the size, color, and number of blooms that these produce. Most bulbs will multiply over time by themselves. After a few years you may need to remove or transplant a portion of them to new areas if they are taking over the space. When ordering these bulbs, be sure to purchase enough to get the garden started and to have nice variety of species. If you end up with extra, you can always give them to a neighbor or friend. They might offer you something that you do not have growing in exchange for the extra flowers. While I tend to favor the dark blue traditional bearded iris bulbs, I enjoy planting a little bit of several colors nearby. This makes for great flower bouquets during the bloom period.
Perennials do well in most climate regions. It does not matter where you live, there are sure to be many types of perennials to pick from for your garden. When choosing what to grow, I usually plant the taller perennials in the back with shorter ones near the front of the bed of flowers. It is also a good idea to vary the color and leaf type of the plants. This can create a more well rounded look for the garden. Another thing to consider is when all of the different bulbs will be blooming. It is nice to have a variety of bloom times throughout the year so you always have something blooming. Allium bulbs and bearded iris bulbs both have good bloom times, this makes them quite popular. It is always a good idea to plan the garden before starting any of your planting. This will help in the long run and make everything much easier. It can be hard on plants to keep moving them all the time, but once in a while is okay. Again, most bulbs like good soil and lots of sun. Have fun planting.

Healthy, vigorous tomato vines can produce a lot of fruit. If you’re new to gardening, try growing just a few tomato plants at first — perhaps two or three plants of two to three different varieties. But of the thousands available, from cherished heirloom types to the hottest new hybrids, how do you narrow your choices?
