Better Veggies With Heirloom Seeds

April 10th, 2010

More and more seed companies are marketing and regularly selling heirloom vegetable seeds to appreciative gardeners. Heirloom seeds routinely produce better flavored vegetables which our great-grandparents used to regularly eat in the days prior to modern hybrid seeds. Naturally, our hybrid vegetables remain healthy, quite edible, and easier to grow than heirloom vegetables. As a matter of fact, these advantages were the purpose for the creation of hybrid seeds in the first place. However, just as with homemade jelly and hand fashioned furniture, many of us feel the additional effort that these vegetables require is warranted by the old-fashioned aroma and the tactile connection to our heritage. Another must see is the Black & Decker CMM1200 Cordless Electric Mower.

By and large, the vegetable seeds which are labeled as heirloom seeds are required to have two attributes. They should be open-pollinated, and the variety needs to be a minimum of 50 years old. Even though many seeds which are sold in catalogs or stores may meet one of the aforementioned prerequisites, they need to meet both standards for a reputable seed retailer to describe them as Heirloom.  Be sure to check out the Black & Decker MM875 Mulching Mower.

Nearly all seeds bought right now are called Hybrids. A hybrid is a plant which is the outcome of cross-pollinating two different plants. One drawback encountered with hybrids is, they can’t replicate themselves. If you plant cross-pollinated seeds, then gather the seeds from the first generation plants, that next generation of seeds will merely have the characteristics of one of its genetic forebearers. Possibly an oversimplified explanation may clear this up. If your seeds produce hybrid plants resulting from a mixture of red peppers and yellow peppers, the hybrid might grow orange peppers. If you remove the seeds from the orange peppers and plant them, the second generation plants would only produce either green or yellow peppers.

Heirloom seeds, on the other hand, are open-pollinated varieties. As a result, if you remove seeds from these plants, the second generation plants will grow ‘true to type, which means the exact same vegetable will keep growing generation after generation. The capacity of these vegetables to reproduce themselves is the way these varieties have carried on for fifty or a hundred years.

While the fifty year minimum for establishing the  heirloom varieties might seem arbitrary, the decade which followed the Second World War represents the beginning of when major seed companies were developing and selling the more durable hybrid vegetable seeds. Modern gardeners have developed a new taste  for the older vegetable varieties, nowadays, and the seed companies have responded by committing more and more advertizing space to Heirloom vegetables.

Please do not assume that hybrid vegetables are inherently inferior. The efforst which produced our hybrid vegetables has produced disease and drought resistance and higher yields in modern agriculture, a situation which has multinational implications. Heirloom vegetables are appreciated by some home gardeners, anyway, as a result of their texture and flavor, and their propensity to call upon memories of Grandma’s tomato slices.

Roof And Balcony Garden Design Ideas

March 27th, 2010

If you live in the city and you have a little roof or balcony area to work with, you may be able to plant and grow a garden. Designing landscaping ideas for places like these generally has to address the obstacles of constant severe winds and scorching heat from direct sun. However, with the right planning and planting ideas, you can make a screen to block out a lot of the wind and create a little shade to give protection from the piercing rays of the sun.

The first essential in planning such a garden is to research the construction of the building. Find out what materials the roof or balcony is made of and how it is put together. Balconies and roofs can have very little space and if they’re required hold furniture, decor, and heavy potted plants, they should be able to hold a descent bit of weight. If you are building a small garden on a roof, the roof must be made of waterproof material so that leaks do not occur, and there must be a good drainage system to carry away excess water. if it is going to be easily accessed and enjoyed, there should be a safe way to get to the roof or balcony garden.

It’s probable that there will be utility poles and wire in and around the area of your roof top garden. These can easily be camoflaged by planting the right types of plants in the right places. Taller plants in larger containers can also create a screen to block out neighboring views while smaller containers filled with flowers will add some more visual element. Roof top gardens are the same as any small garden designs, patio design, and courtyards, in the sense that you should try not to crowd the small amount of space that you have. Be sure to plan for a little seating room where you can sit back and enjoy any views that can be saved framed rather than completely hidden from view.

It’s often preferable to use long lightweight planters rather than using a lot of small pots as it will spread the load out over more area more evenly. It’s a good idea to also add water absorbing crystals into your planting medium. This can help lessen your plants daily watering as they hold water until plants need it and it all doesn’t just evaporate. If the roof is unable to hold much weight, you may also consider watering with hydroponics. And since hydroponically grown plants only need liquid and a light base, the pots and plants don’t weigh as much as pots full of soil.

You may also consider raising a small worm colony in your balcony or roof garden. This can produce some rich organic soil for your plants while also cutting back on your garbage and waste.

Residential Lawn Maintenance: How To Do It Efficiently

March 25th, 2010

There is no better way than maintaining a lawn properly to increase the aesthetic beauty of your garden.  Lawn increases not only the attractiveness, but also the practicality of your garden.  For keeping your lawn green and succulent, residential lawn maintenance plays a noteworthy role.  Caring your lawn is a process which needs your attention all through the year.

There are many conditions which can damage the lawns such as weeds, pests, trampling, climatic conditions, even sheer negligence.  If not attended, then the grass would grow to unmanageable heights.  The process of taking care of garden lawns is not very difficult, but you need to possess information on how to conserve the lawn so that it becomes an owner’s pride

Pro help can also be sought in this regard if you’re feeling that residential lawn maintenance is outside your capacity.  For home gardens, it is recommended to go for accessible and eco-friendly lawn care tools and other materials.  Lawn mowers are inevitable to keep the green carpet in its best shape, but you also have to water and feed the grass as per the advice of mavens.  Organic fertilizers, fertilizer and water forestall the accumulation of chemicals around your place.

Trampling is mostly done by children and pets.  Of course you cannot prevent them from doing it every time.  But once you notice the defect, you should cure the grass as soon as possible and reduce the impact by treating the turf.  Different patterns of trimming and nutrients are required for different types of grass.  Some grass can be cut down to less than an inch whereas some others cannot be cut so low.  Some need water in scarce whereas some need copious amount of water.

Another important aspect of residential lawn maintenance is controlling pests and weeds.  The presence of weeds can spoil the fantastic thing about any lawn.  You have the option of either pulling them up manually or using a weed eater in case of grim conditions.  When pests attack your lawn, the grass becomes yellowish or brown.  The great thing about the turf would be spoilt due to this.  In order to maintain an ideal lawn, consistent watch is required and corrective measures taken in case of even a minor blemish.

My Butterfly Flower Garden

June 21st, 2009

A garden full of flowers can bring such pleasure. But the blooms themselves can bring something else too: butterflies. In this month’s newsletter, we reveal the techniques that will turn your garden into a field of fluttering colors.

Of course, it helps if you can actually see the flowers in your garden! Usually, that means putting the tall flowers at the back and the shorter plants at the front. But does that rule always hold true? We offer a couple of suggestions that break the rules.

One of those tips involves planting flowers around rocks but you could also use stepping stones. Our stepping stone molds will give your garden a truly unique look… and give your flowers a background to help them stand out. Read it all here…

How To Turn Your Flower Garden Into A Butterfly Heaven

We like to think that our flower seeds will give your garden all the beauty it needs. With a little attention, they can do even more than that. The flowers can also attract butterflies, bringing additional color to your outdoor areas.

Our zinnias, for example, create nectar that’s a treat for the Silver Checkerspot, a yellow-orange butterfly found in most eastern and central states between May and September. Our purple coneflowers are popular with Common Wood-Nymphs and Monarch, and shasta daisies provide a meal for the Mourning Cloak, a beautiful purple-black butterfly that appears across almost the entire country.

You shouldn’t really need to do anything special to turn your flower garden into a butterfly paradise but a little planning can increase the numbers of butterflies that you attract — and the amount that you enjoy them.

Planting particular types of flowers in large groups, for example, will make them easier for butterflies to spot and give you fluttering clusters instead of migrating individuals that come in ones and twos. Creating areas of light and shade will let the butterflies both warm themselves in the sun and provide cool spots out of the heat. And puddles of water and rotting fruit can also give your butterflies a reason to stick around… provided you don’t mind the smell.

You can also try matching the plant favored by the larvae with the flower preferred by the butterfly. Place sunflowers near zinnias, for example, and you’ll create a nursery for the Silvery Checkerspots, guaranteeing a supply when the caterpillars pupate between May and September.

And finally, you can also plan your garden so that you have a spot to sit in the summer shade while the butterflies enjoy the flowers that surround you — and you enjoy both.

Improving Your Garden by Adding a Fountain

May 21st, 2009

A great way to spice up your garden landscape is to add a water feature. These can be both soothing and aesthetically appealing. I’ve found that there are nothing more relaxing than sitting on a bench next to my garden and listening to my fountain while I read a good book or do some studying. Putting in a water feature is very easy and relatively inexpensive, and
will add immensely to the pleasantness of your garden. Also, the maintenance level is minimal.

Usually, people install fountains for the benefit of the natural ambience it provides. For some reason, being around a gorgeous scene of water gives you a positive energy. This is also good if you practice Tai Chi or some form of yoga or meditation. The constant drone of the water is exactly what most people need to concentrate on what they are doing. Even if
you’re not into that kind of stuff, just being in a garden with a fountain has a sort of meditative quality to it, even if you’re not trying to do so. I recommend it to everyone.

When you first decide to put in a fountain, you need to put great care into picking out one that will go well with the rest of your garden. If you have any other decorations, you want to consider if it goes well with your motif. Does the fountain you’re considering stand out in your garden like a sore thumb, or does it look like it was meant to be there? If you’re like me, you can’t naturally tell whether the fountain will be a good addition to your garden just by looking at it. So my solution was to bring my sister (a natural at fashion design and that kind of stuff) along with a picture of my garden to the store. I was able to get her expert opinion, as well as see for myself what it would look like. By doing this I was able to get a beautiful rock fountain that goes marvelously with the rest of my garden.

However, I still had a slight problem with supplying my fountain with power. You see, my garden isn't very close to my house. I thought it would look pretty tacky to run an extension cord across my yard, so I must come up with another solution. I discussed my situation with a Home Depot employee, and he quickly found me the exact solution I needed: an
extension cord meant for being buried! All it took was a few hours of digging a small trench across my backyard, and I had power to my fountain without an unsightly cord running across my yard. After I got over this little hitch, my fountain plan went beautifully.

So if you're looking for a way to make your garden a more classy and beautiful space to be, I hope you consider installing a fountain. The whole process is surprisingly cheap, and I think that you will be very happy with the results. Having a fountain in your garden is not only
soothing, but it also adds a lot of character to an otherwise bland garden. Remember, gardens are not just for giving us vegetables! A garden is a place to go when you want to retreat from the outside world and dwell in your own thoughts with no disturbance.

Lawn Sprinkler – Other Application You Never Expected

May 21st, 2009

If you think about the use of lawn sprinkler is just to watering lawns in garden or park, then you are mistaken. A lawn sprinkler has other usages only if you know how to use it. So, what are some other things you can perform with it?

Water Toys

You can make a lot of toys to become more fun by only adding a lawn sprinkler. Obviously, you must play it outdoors, when it’s warm (as you will get quite wet) and not when there’s a drought alert in the area.  The toys can make the water blast, wriggle, and move in unpredictable patterns. Play it with your friends, family or your pet. Then, just be prepared to get wet and have fun.

Dog Toy

Not all dogs can swim and some dogs even have a real fear of water.  However, on a really hot day throughout summer, Fido would love it if you turned on the lawn sprinkler.  Not only will he be able to cool off, but dogs are often fascinated by the pattern of moving water.  Sometimes it seems to hypnotize them.  Always keep an eye on Fido when the lawn sprinkler is on, in case he thinks the water is trying to invade his territory.

Flame Thrower

Some people even can make a flame thrower by attaching a propane gas tank to a common lawn sprinkler. It is a very interesting thing, but is not very suggested for anyone who is not experienced with handling dangerous chemicals, explosives, or large sudden explosions, especially children.

Practical Jokes

Practice these practical jokes of lawn sprinkler outside before trying them inside.  You require a sprinkler that can be hooked up to a regular kitchen spigot.  Some sprinklers can be hooked to an outside spigot and then brought inside.  Great to plant inside a newlywed’s bedroom for their wedding night.  Make a small cover with holes in it so it is not clear what it is and turn it on as soon as the lights go out.

Putting Out Very Small Fires

Though a lawn sprinkler is not as good as chemical sprays, hoses or even a bucket of sand on a fire, it can be somewhat useful anyhow. When your home as well as property are getting quite dry, you can keep the area damp and also keep from being a fire hazard by giving a good spritz with a lawn sprinkler. It is comforting particularly numerous if there is any family member who is smoker and like throw cigarette blunts all over the place.

Thus, does the above-mentioned information still not satisfy your need in knowing about lawn sprinkler? Explore more the suitable information herein!
