There’s nothing better than cooking with fresh ingredients. Plucking the fruit of your gardening labors from your own plants is an incredibly satisfying feeling. You can save money and increase nutrition by using those plants in your meals.

Some of the most popular plants to grow for home cooking are herbs. Most herbs are easy to grow and require little care other than faithful watering and occasional pruning. Once you taste fresh herbs in your home cooking, you’ll never want to go back to using dried herbs!

Bring the Garden Indoors

Do you love the idea of growing an herb garden, but you just don’t have the room or the time to devote to a large garden? If so, herb bags may be just the solution for you. Herb bags are waterproof foil bags that contain everything you need to grow a complete plant.

In order to grow plants in herb bags, all you need to do is tear open the bag, add water, and set the bag in an area where it can receive adequate sunshine. You can grow just one or an entire kitchen full of fresh, green, flavorful herbs.

People who don’t have a natural green thumb can also be successful with herb bags. You won’t need much upkeep sicne herb bags are self contained growing setups.

Herb bags are especially useful if you live in a climate where gardening is difficult, or if you have very little indoor and outdoor space to grow plants. Even if you have an outdoor garden, keeping your herbs growing indoors ensures that they will always be close at hand whenever you need them for cooking.

There are different herb bags to match all of your cooking needs. Oregano, thyme, parsley, and basil are some of the best basic herbs to grow in your home, and you can get all of them in herb bags.

You can get your hands on lavender or mint herb bags if you are looking for something more adventurous? These herbs are very handy to have around for seasoning food, making delicious teas, and making your home smell fantastic at all times.

Every home could benefit from the addition of fresh plants, and herb garden plants are the perfect choice to grow indoors.Fresh herbs, whether to be used for cooking or not, can add a wholesome feel to your home and increase the beauty of your living space.

Many people around the world rely on Chinese herbs to cure different types of diseases. Although many skeptics argue that using Chinese herbs to cure certain types of diseases is not practical especially, many people still believe that using herbs is a lot better than using pharmaceutical drugs. If you are one of those people who are yet to decide whether or not you should use Chinese medicinal herbs to cure some types of ailments, here are some points that may convince you to make that switch from pharmaceutical drugs to herbal medicine.

Effects and Side Effects

Pharmaceutical products are mostly made of synthetic ingredients that are manufactured in the laboratory. Although synthetic ingredients are able to cure certain types of diseases, there is no telling what negative impact it may have on the body as well. It cannot be denied that all types of pharmaceutical drugs have side effects. Some pharmaceutical products may not have serious side effects on the body but just the same, there are still some slight negative effects especially when they are taken over a long period of time. Studies show that people who have been under drugs for a long time often suffer from some disorders including abdominal disorders, nerve disorders, weakened immune system and the likes.

On the other hand, Chinese herbs come from natural sources and are most of the times organic herbs and have been proven to effective for many generations. Most of the Chinese herbs that are sold in the market today have been used by the Chinese people since the 1st century Han Dynasty. Although some of these Chinese herbs are said to be poisonous when taken in great amounts, most of these herbs are beneficial to the body. According to experts, most types of Chinese herbs do not have any know side effects. Most people who taken certain types of Chinese herbs regularly do not complain of any negative changes in their body.

Cost

Most pharmaceutical products are considerably more expensive that certain types of Chinese herbs. If you happen to live in the countryside and you have plenty of space to plant herbs, you can grow your own Chinese herbs, it can easily be grown like any other herb garden plants.Doing this will give you access to fresh herbs anytime. On the other hand, if you are living in the city and there is no place to grow herbs, you can always get them in the market.

Isn’t basil one of your favorite herb plants? Having an Italian meal without basil just is not any good. This awesome smelling plant is one of the best ones to begin with because it is so not complicated to grow and harvest.

You’ll see basil all over Greek, French and Italian menus, but this little herb that could is native to the tropical Pacific islands. I don’t know what twist of chance brought it to Europe, but what a lovely twist that was. One of my favorite dinners is pesto, which is a a cinch green sauce made by chopping a whole lot of basil and mixing it with olive oil. Wonderful!

There are many types of basil to choose from, including:

Sweet Basil: This type is the most popular one for dishes. It has glossy leaves and has the full basil taste.

Lettuce-Leaf Basil: This kind of basil has broad leaves and a milder flavor. There are a number of kinds of this leaf type, such as Mammoth, Napoletano and Green Ruffles.

Bush Basil: Tiny Leaf Purple, Bush, Piccolo Fine Verde, Spicy Globe and Green Bouquet are just a couple of the many varieties of this shorter basil which is awesome for edging.

Lemon Basil: This lemon scented variety has short, small leaves. You can use the leaves in vinegar, fruit salad, fish and poultry dinners and herbal tea.

Purple Basil: It’s no surprise that purple basil has wide purple leaves and delicate pink flowers. This type is best in vinegars and Greek dinners.

Thai Basil: This kind of basil has long, thin leaves and is (of course) native to Thailand. It also has a slight licorice flavor that adds extra flavor to Thai and Indian dishes.

Beginning with seeds is a good way to get going with basil, but you can also purchase your herb from the nursery, greenhouse or home improvement store. Regardless of how you start, your plants should reach about 20 inches high as long as they have lots of sun and well-drained sod.

I pinch back the white blossoms that will start showing up during the summer. The reason I do that is because I’m not in it for the flowers; I want those lovely 1-two inch leaves. When you cut off the flowers, you get a fuller plant with more leaves.

To harvest your basil, clip the stem just before the flowers, remove the leaves and dry them. They can be stored in a freezer bag once you dry them. You can also skip the drying out part and stick them immediately into the freezer. If you really want to release their flavor, put the leaves in a container and cover them with olive oil. They can keep for a number of months this way.

You may grow basil indoors, but I cannot suggest it. My attempt at wintering basil several years ago was not successful. Basil just cannot grow and thrive unless it gets moist soil and gets around 5 hours of direct natural light a day. I just didn’t have the right amount of lighting in my kitchen.

Good luck with your herb gardening. Be sure to let me know how your herb garden grows.

A garden full of flowers can bring such pleasure. But the blooms themselves can bring something else too: butterflies. In this month’s newsletter, we reveal the techniques that will turn your garden into a field of fluttering colors.

Of course, it helps if you can actually see the flowers in your garden! Usually, that means putting the tall flowers at the back and the shorter plants at the front. But does that rule always hold true? We offer a couple of suggestions that break the rules.

One of those tips involves planting flowers around rocks but you could also use stepping stones. Our stepping stone molds will give your garden a truly unique look… and give your flowers a background to help them stand out. Read it all here…

How To Turn Your Flower Garden Into A Butterfly Heaven

We like to think that our flower seeds will give your garden all the beauty it needs. With a little attention, they can do even more than that. The flowers can also attract butterflies, bringing additional color to your outdoor areas.

Our zinnias, for example, create nectar that’s a treat for the Silver Checkerspot, a yellow-orange butterfly found in most eastern and central states between May and September. Our purple coneflowers are popular with Common Wood-Nymphs and Monarch, and shasta daisies provide a meal for the Mourning Cloak, a beautiful purple-black butterfly that appears across almost the entire country.

You shouldn’t really need to do anything special to turn your flower garden into a butterfly paradise but a little planning can increase the numbers of butterflies that you attract — and the amount that you enjoy them.

Planting particular types of flowers in large groups, for example, will make them easier for butterflies to spot and give you fluttering clusters instead of migrating individuals that come in ones and twos. Creating areas of light and shade will let the butterflies both warm themselves in the sun and provide cool spots out of the heat. And puddles of water and rotting fruit can also give your butterflies a reason to stick around… provided you don’t mind the smell.

You can also try matching the plant favored by the larvae with the flower preferred by the butterfly. Place sunflowers near zinnias, for example, and you’ll create a nursery for the Silvery Checkerspots, guaranteeing a supply when the caterpillars pupate between May and September.

And finally, you can also plan your garden so that you have a spot to sit in the summer shade while the butterflies enjoy the flowers that surround you — and you enjoy both.

Due to its wide number, orchid species almost can not be mentioned one by one. You may be able to mention orchid species you know one by one but I believe that it just small potatoes when compared to the real count of orchid species. That’s why orchid species almost can not be mentioned precisely due to its wide number.

Orchid blooms are very fantastic, and some plants have exclusive color combinations that make them an attractive and desirable complement to any home. However, choosing amongst the orchid species could be a tricky decision. There are more than 25,000 species of orchids. What’s more, though lots ofthese species will not be available in your region, you will still be confronted with selecting amongst various beautiful plants.

Popular Orchid Species

Conceivably, the best way to restrict your selections is to watch some of the more popular orchid species. These particular varieties have been developed for their flexibility to a home environment and are relatively easy to care for.

Dendrobiums are at the top of this list. This species of orchids offer a wide variety of colors, from white to purple to yellow. Originally found in most of Asia as well as the Philippines, Australia, New Guinea and Borneo, these plants are in vast demand. Because of their desirability, hobbyists have created hybrids for this orchid species.

Cattleya is another popular orchid species that is naturally found in parts of South America and Asia. The flowers of this plant are especially stunning. The colors are usually, white, yellow or a deep purple. An interesting aspect of the Cattleya is that it gracefully spreads out, rather than grows in a compact pattern.

The last of the three most popular orchid species is Vanda. It has a very unique look and exotic flowers. The leaves appear from a single stalk with the flowers growing from one of the leaf’s bases. This is very special as the blooms can number anywhere from five to twenty per plant. This species originally made its home in Indonesia, China, the Himalayas, Australia and New Guinea.

Choosing the Right Species of Orchids

While these three species of orchids are both admired and stunning, there are literally thousands of varieties in the world. The key to choosing the species that is right for you is dependant on where you live and what type of environment you will be providing the plants. With the growing demand for orchids, and more people becoming orchid enthusiasts, growers are experimenting and developing new hybrids.

Though the novice seems easy to grow some orchid species, they are often hardier to enjoy for the indoor gardener. If you plan to grow some of orchid species, don’t wait any longer. Now is the finest moment to begin a lifetime hobby of growing these magnificent plants.
