I’m sure that most of us homeowners would love to have a beautiful garden either in the front yard or back yard, right? It’s really true to what they say that “a house is not a home without a beautiful garden”. That is definitely true. People will fill their gardens with beautiful flowers from chrysanthemums to roses but if you ask me, mine is different. Instead of planting roses and other flowers and other ornamental plants, I plant herbs that I can use for cooking and can be used for medicinal purposes. You may not notice it but having a home herb garden cannot only make your house a home, but it will make your home beautiful and healthy at the same time. Try to read more about herb gardens and you will know what I mean and you will surely love what you are about to learn.

A basic herb garden is not hard to create and it can be created in a remarkably small amount of space. Therefore, no matter if you live in an apartment or you have a yard that is perfect for planting making a basic herb garden is easy.

There are some things you would need to start on your basic herb garden. The first thing is to decide what type of basic herb garden you want. Do you want a container herb garden or are you looking for something a bit grander like a kitchen garden or a backyard home herb garden.

Once you have decided the type of garden that you want to create you will need to decide if you want to create your garden from seeds or from already existing plants that you will transplant. Once you have decided what kind of planting you want.

Supplies

There are a few supplies that you are going to need for your herb garden. Of course, these supplies vary depending on which type of herb garden you are creating. The list will also include all the supplies you will need for both gardens. Some of the supplies are going to be the same so the list is combined for the purpose of being brief. The items you will need are: soil, fertilizer, seeds or herb plants, containers, and a spade.

Instructions

If you are using a container or containers to create your herb garden, prepare the container by placing the soil in it. Then depending on the type of fertilizer you are using add the fertilizer to create the growing environment. You may or may not depending on the type of soil you get want to wet the soil down before planting. If you are, using seeds follow the planting instructions for the types of herbs you are planting. If you are using already established plants follow replanting instructions. You can always find them online if you need to though they are usually listed with the plant.

For kitchen gardens weed and till the area to break up the soil and remove any large objects like rocks. Then add in the top soil and follow the above instructions on planting the seeds or transplant. Make sure that you pay attention to the lighting that your herbs need, place them in a place that has the right amount of light and shade so they can grow properly. Make sure that you always browse the bookstore, or internet for herb garden how to.

Anyone who cooks knows that the most expensive ingredients you can buy are herbs and spices. Just go into the local herb section of your local supermarket and you’ll see how expensive these little containers can be. And even though you may only need a pinch of this or a dash of that, you must buy the entire container that will last you a long time. If you throw in enough of these herbs, you may be looking at a hefty grocery bill. If you cook a lot, though, you could save so much money by just growing your own culinary herb garden. You can find the seeds you need in any garden store or even in your local supermarket. Herbs don’t take much to keep them growing strong and healthy. As long as they are given a lot of sunlight, water, love and attention, you’ll definitely have a culinary herb to last you a long time.

Inside Growing

Many people don’t have the luxury of a yard in which to grow a lush garden to help them with growing herbs. People who live in apartments, for example, can’t grow outside gardens. For these people, and for those who live in an area not conducive to good plant growing, there are devices that will grow herbs right on your kitchen counter. Kitchen herb gardens will grow just as lush as any outside garden, but when you grow your herbs inside, you don’t have to worry about pests as much, you don’t have to worry about scavengers and you can completely control the light, the water and other factors that go into growing a successful garden. The drawback to these types of culinary herb gardens is that you are limited to the size of the device as to how much you can grow.

Vacuum Packing

Once you’ve successfully grown your culinary home herb garden, you then have to store it correctly so that it will last you a long time. It’s recommended that you fill a container not unlike those that you found sold in your local store. That will last you a while. The rest, if you have plenty left over, you should vacuum pack so that it will stay fresh. You can buy vacuum sealers in your local store or you can find them online. You simply put your herbs in a plastic baggy and then use the vacuum sealer to seal the baggy while sucking the air out. This will allow you to have all the herbs you need to cook masterpieces.

You can grow a culinary herb garden, whether you have a green thumb or not. Growing herbs isn’t hard at all. As long as the plants are given the attention they need, you'll find that it is very easy to have a fresh supply of herbs whenever you need them.
