Growing your own indoor tomato plants is fun, easy and a great way to keep the kids entertained for a couple of hours. All you need is some tomato seeds, a few plant pots, some organic compost which isn’t peat free and a little bit of time. Here we explore how to grow your own tomato plants indoors in simple terms so you can get started growing today.
First of all you need to germinate your tomato plant seeds. What is germination? It is the process of getting your seeds started on their long voyage to turn from seeds to seedling, to a plant and finally to bear fruit. To germinate your tomato seed, place it wrapped up in a little bit of damp tissue or cotton wool and store it somewhere dark for about 24 hours. In this time the seed will break open and start growing.
Next you need a small plant pot. This should be a seedling pot and is usually no bigger than a tea cup. You don’t need any organic soil fertilizers at this point, the natural nutrients in your compost will be enough to get your plants going. Place the compost in the pot and pat down and then add a little water so that it is moist to touch. Put a small hole in the top part of the soil, one centimeter down and place your germinated seed in the small hole. Place a tiny bit of soil over the top and water ever so lightly again, making sure you don’t disturb the seed. Now place your pot by a windowsill and within a week your tomato plant should be a seedling.
After a couple of weeks it is time to transfer your tomato plant to a new larger pot. Like you did with the first pot, put plenty of compost soil in there and then get your seedling pot and burrow a hole of its size in the new soil. Dampen your seedling pot soil, turn over and pat out of the pot gently. Then turn over and place in the hole in the larger pot, placing more compost in there to fill in any gaps. Next, water lightly, add some organic soil nutrients and replace on your windowsill.
It might take a few months in total for your tomato plants to begin bearing fruit, but when they do, they will be the most delicious tomatoes you have ever tasted. Much fruitier and juicier than their supermarket counterparts. After tasting them, you will no doubt be thinking about expanding your growing operation to a greenhouse!
