There has been a long-lasting and commonly held misconception that caring for orchids is painstakingly complicated. With a multitude of orchid species and over 100,000 hybrids, a person of any skill level can grow orchids without any problems.
Most orchids don’t require any more attention than the average indoor or garden plants. There are, of course, a small number of species that will need that little extra care though. The first crucial step is to discover what specific needs your particular orchid has. Because they have such exquisite blooms, orchids have become very popular as a house plant. Giving your orchid the care that it needs will guarantee that it flowers just as it did when you first purchased it. You’re probably the owner of a phaleanopsis orchid, as they are quite popular due to the fact that they are easier to care for than the other, less known types.You know you have a phaleanopsis orchid if the color is white or purple.
An orchid will bloom for at least 3 months of the year – every year – if it is taken care of correctly. The prime location to place your orchid is at the window. This will make sure it will receive the sunlight it requires, but it should avoid the noon sun due to the severe extremities and will suffer as a result. The best possible location is on the eastern side of your house where it will enjoy the morning and afternoon sunlight and have maximum benefit. Fluorescent lights placed about a foot above the orchids flowers can act as a substitute for natural sunlight but it’s still advised to expose your orchid to normal daylight hours.
The optimum temperatures to grow orchids between are 55° Fahrenheit (13° Celsius) and 80° Fahrenheit (27° Celsius). Any higher than this will have a damaging effect on your orchid which you certainly don’t want. If orchids are exposed to temperatures in excess of 90° Fahrenheit (32° Celsius), the result will be extremely harmful. You have to be very careful to avoid over-watering orchids because this can easily occur. The flower must remain moist though, so your orchid watering routine should be just every one or two weeks, or keep it in a water tray. Having said that, if you do keep your orchid in a water tray, the only point to remember is to not allow the roots touch the bottom or edges of the tray – this will lead to a continuous water supply and result in over-watering.
A great tip to maintain your orchid and the longevity of its flowers, is to apply fertilizer before it flowers each time. Once it has bloomed, you don’t need to fertilize it again until the next season. Pruning your orchid while it’s in the process of flowering will help a second set of blooms to develop.
